How to Unlock Bug Catching in Heartopia
Before you can start filling out your insect collection, you need to unlock the hobby:
- Reach Developer Level 6.
- You will receive a Hobby Expansion Ticket.
- Visit Naniwa, the insect-catching mentor, near the river garden.
- Turn in the ticket to unlock the hobby permanently and receive your first Bubble Net.
Crucial Note: Your Hobby Level is incredibly important. Rare 4-star and 5-star insects simply will not spawn in your world until your Insect Catching level reaches Level 4 and Level 6, respectively.
Understanding Bug Spawn Rules
Three golden rules dictate whether an insect will spawn: Time, Weather, and Location. If you're missing a bug, you're likely hunting at the wrong time of day.
⏱️ Server Time Periods
Heartopia divides a real-world server day into four distinct 6-hour windows:
- Dawn 00:00 - 05:59
- Morning 06:00 - 11:59
- Afternoon 12:00 - 17:59
- Evening/Night 18:00 - 23:59
☁️ Dynamic Weather
Weather directly controls rare spawns.
- Snow = Rain: Snowing counts as Raining for the purposes of insect spawns. You won't miss out on wet-weather bugs during winter!
- Rainbows: Rainbow weather is the ultimate jackpot condition, spawning exclusive and highly valuable rarities.

Missing the Postman Butterfly?
If you are missing certain exotic insects like the Postman Butterfly, Apollo, or White Witch, stop running around the map! These do not spawn naturally in the wild.
They are exclusive to the "Bait the Insects" event, which can be initiated by paying a fee at Onsen Mountain or occurs naturally during specific seasonal cycles.
